Gray’s “Wonder Groove” is named for Stevie Wonder (so states the back cover), yet due to the choice of keyboards used, it has a way of sounding more like Gino Vannelli’s Stevie-inspired instrumental backing. Between Hawkshaw and Gray alone, this collection burns brighter than many others Hawkshaw’s “Hawkwind and Fire” evokes Bob James-esque brass and woodwinds to a funky beat, and on the other end of the spectrum, the somewhat ahead-of-its-time “Fuel Ejection” is a fast-paced exercise in clavinet, synthesizer, and electric pianos that should not be missed. Perhaps one of Bruton Music’s all-out funkiest collections, Light My Fire contains selections from the Bruton Music All-Stars: Alan Hawkshaw, Steve Gray, Frank Ricotti (with Les Hurdle), and a couple more.
